The Growing Place teaching philosophy is based on active learning. Teachers facilitate activities in an environment that fosters self-expression, independence, and respect for others. Children are stimulated to explore, share ideas, and build on and expand their knowledge. Teachers prepare activities that allow students to manipulate their materials and formulate their own conclusions based on their previous knowledge, their new observations and the ideas of both other children and the teacher. The goal is to create a stimulating environment where students are engaged in joyful learning.
Our Goals to Foster in Children:
• Self Esteem
• Independence
• Creative Thinking
• Problem Solving
• Love of Learning
• Knowledge of the World
• Physical, Social, Emotional and Intellectual Development
• Cooperation Skills; Working with Others
Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten
Our Preschool specializes in “good first teaching” of foundational concepts using first hand experiences and the exploring of concepts in many different ways. Our goal is to allow each child to reach their potential, and develop a love of learning. Our program includes:
Literacy – A play based approach to literacy that integrates oral language, listening, early reading and writing.
Math – Understanding concepts by manipulating a wide variety of objects; exploring shapes through building, tracing, counting, estimating, tallying, patterning, and classifying.
Science – Children are offered the opportunity to observe, investigate, question, experiment and explore the physical world around them.
Music – Provide an opportunity for children to express themselves through music. They learn to sing, listen, follow directions, play games, dance and use rhythm instruments.
Physical Education – Provide opportunities to develop large motor skills through activities on the outdoor equipment, as well as activities with balls, rings, bean bags, jump ropes, etc. We promote an awareness of good health practices.
Social Studies – Introduce concepts that allow children to relate to the world and people around them. We share themes of cooperation, empathy, and respect. The different family celebrations and cultural customs represented in the school are respected and shared.
Cooking – through regular cooking activities following recipes, our children learn basic cooking principles, where food is from, math concepts, as well as cooperation and turn taking.
We respect and welcome all families and faith traditions. We offer a developmentally appropriate curriculum, which celebrates the rich diversity of the families in our school.
Whether you worship with us or not, whether you believe as we do or not, we want to be a part of your community and walk with you in the amazing journey of parenting and raising young people. We are vitally interested in the spiritual nurture and care of our children and families. For that reason, children and families share their religious/ spiritual traditions with one another at times during the year in a way that is accepting and celebratory.
